1. Construction
The construction of a ski is what gives it its strength and durability. The two most common constructions are wood core and composite core skiing. Wood core skis are built from compressed layers of hardwood, so they are much lighter than composite skis, allowing for great control and mobility. Wood core skis also tend to be more affordable.
2. Rocker Type
Rocker tips have become extremely popular recently due to their maneuverability on the slopes. A rocker profile has the ski's tip curved up (arcing out) while the ski's tail is also curved up. This allows for a flatter surface on top and makes it much easier to maneuver your skis.
3. Board shape
The All Mountain board shape is ideal for all-around use, especially if you start skiing basic terrain (groomed runs). Wide sidecut for easy maneuvering in deep snow, but still manageable when using edges or edges and heels (for beginners).
1. Are all-mountain skis suitable for backcountry skiing?
You can technically use any ski for backcountry touring as long as your shoes and bindings allow you to lift your heels to climb (or "skin") uphill with the aid of climbing skins and then lock them back into the bindings for the descent.
2. Are touring and backcountry skiing the same thing?
Ski touring is the practice of skiing in the backcountry on unmarked or unpatrolled terrain. Touring can extend for many days and is frequently done off-piste and away from ski resorts. Although it doesn't involve a ski lift or other mode of transportation, it resembles backcountry skiing.
3. Should I purchase wider skis?
Check that the size of your skis is appropriate for the preferred skiing technique: Skinnier skis are better for carving turns on groomed lines, while wider skis offer more float in deep snow.
