BUYING GUIDE

1. Skin Width

The breadth of the skin should ideally be 5–6 mm narrower than the tip of your ski. It's usually okay to go a little narrower if you can't find the ideal size.

2. Surface of a skin

Climbing skin grip will depend on how many silicone or nylon grippers are in each strap or hole along the material. The more grippers, the better for gripping slippery surfaces like ice, rock, or snow.

3. Cutting and sizing

A skin that is roughly 5–6 millimeters thinner than the widest area of your ski is what you want. As a result, the skin can cover your ski's base and edges. A 125 mm skin will suit the tip of a ski with measurements like those of the Volkl Nanuq, which measure 131-96-114.

FAQs

1. How do I pick a skin for climbing?

Choose a skin width a few millimeters wider than or any amount greater than the widest part of your ski (generally near the tip). You could choose a climbing skin that is 130mm broad or wider if the widest portion of your ski is 130mm.

2. What purpose do ski skins serve?

To be offered grip for climbing, skins are strips of material (originally real animal skins, but now exclusively synthetic) that are attached to the undersides of backcountry and metal-edge touring skis.

3. How much of each ski should be covered by skins?

The biggest dimension of your ski, typically near the tip, should be subtracted by roughly 5 to 7mm to provide the best base coverage. After trimming them using the provided tool to fit the shape of your ski, you will have a skin width that nearly completely covers the base of your ski.
