Bio: Zena el-Khalil, born 1976 in London, grew up in Nigeria, London, New York, currently living in Beirut, Lebanon, the place she calls home. Zena is an installation artist and painter. Her work centers around issues of war, love, family and religion. her work is a direct reflection of the time and space she lives in. She is the co-founder and director of Xanadu*, an art space/collective based in New York City and Beirut. She is also co-founder of Aljisser, an organization dedicated to promote Arab artists internationally. Zena has curated numerous art exhibits and events centralized on young Arab artists (particularly Lebanese and Palestinian). She has lectured in several universities and has sat on quite a few juries. some of her artwork has recently been published in the Imagining Ourselves anthology, a project put together by the International Museum of Women in San Francisco. Zena is also a Greenpeace activist and is currently the volunteer coordinator for the Greenpeace Lebanon office. She lives with her soul mate rainbow warrior, Wael and their Jack Russel, Tampopo.
