The Vowels of Love
by Phaedra Zambatha-Pagoulatou
translation by Manya Bean
FOR H.N.
My insolent thought
caressed your brow
and deposited a hesitant kiss
Will you forgive her?
It was a disorderly moment
when I lost my way,
thick lines of trees
blocked the horizon,
I lost light, perspective
you were scattering
the vowels of my love
to the seven winds
and I could not gather them
and cloister them again
inside your eyes.
